Iron Maiden Copied Mercyful Fate (Songs +Links and Explanation Inside)

ok, Iron Maiden's main riff to '' two minutes to midnight'' is a sped up version of Meryful Fate's intro to '' Curse of the Pharoah's''ok so the intro riff in question is from the beginning to 28 seconds in, where a break is made that leads into a solo , leading to the first vocal line.here is a link to curse of the pharoah's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GVDezesc8wthe maiden riff is pretty much the entirety of the song, remember just because you change something dosnt mean its not copying.. the maiden riff has a differnet ending very slightly and is of course sped up substancialy, but their is no question that is it the same basic riff.in 2 minutes to midnight at 22 seconds in when the drums start playing, and the riff starts its loop again it becomes even more similar to pharoahs, as in at 24 seconds the guitar holds the note, just like in the pharoah's opening riff.here is a link to 2 minutes to midnight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L75ikjK1vaImercyful fate's melissa came out in 1983, iron maidens powerslave came out in 1984.. its a pretty obvious copy, i'm a bit dissapointed in maiden but they are still awesome, and so are fate.what do you guys think?EDIT : OH AND I JUST REMEMBERED, BOTH THESE SONGS ARE ACTUALLY A RIP OFF OF VENOM'S '' WELCOME TO HELL'' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE--ehEUg5I%26feature=relatedIron Maiden Copied Mercyful Fate (Songs +Links and Explanation Inside)
Wow, never knew that at all...Either way Iron Maiden still kicks ass, as a matter of fact both bands kick ass.Iron Maiden Copied Mercyful Fate (Songs +Links and Explanation Inside)
i edited orig post, but check it out tzarvenom's welcome to hell released 1981 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE--ehEUg5I%26feature=relateddamn maiden copied a copy. pretty sketch
they're similar, but not enough to be a copy.
they're similar, but not enough to be a copy.
uhhh are you serious? its the same basic riff, a couple notes changed here or there, you can tune the song down a note or two, or play it 2-3x faster.. its still copying.
what does it matter? I've basically heard all my bands play riffs that sound like other band's riffs. The three that pop into mind are Metallica, Megadeth, and Diamond Head. The entirity of Megadeth's song ''When'' is just the ''Call of the Ktulu'' riff (That Dave wrote while in Metallica) and the main riff of ''Am I Evil?'' by Diamond Head. A riff on the new Metallica album is just a slower version of a Megadeth riff. Etc, etc. can't really be that surprising considering how many metal bands there are that use the same or similar chord progression.
Weird. Especially considering that Powerslave was Egyptian themed.
ok, I just listened to the two links in the OP comment. I have to admit, those are eerily similar haha.
So using a simple riff and changing it means copying? I guess almost every band out there is now guilty of copying.
Some band's riffs do sound a lot like others at times, for instance Exumer's Fallen Saint has a riff that sounds just like the one in Slayer's Black Magic. The riff starts at: 0:35http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx5FPohPpl4
Man Mercyful Fate kicked serious ass. 8)

do you realize how easy it is to copy riffs? like look at heavy metal (all types of hard metal like doom, dark, black, death, thrash etc) the majority those bands are all cliche and dont sound any different they all have crappy screaming and roaring, same sounding heavy guitar riffs, same over the top double bass kickers etc.
I've known this but it's not a big deal to me. There's several riff ripoffs out there. Papa Roach - Last Resort rips off Iron Maiden's Genghis Khan. System of a Down (forgot the song) rips off Emperor's ''I Am The Black Wizards''. etc.

they're similar, but not enough to be a copy.
uhhh are you serious? its the same basic riff, a couple notes changed here or there, you can tune the song down a note or two, or play it 2-3x faster.. its still copying.
do you realize how easy it is to copy riffs? like look at heavy metal (all types of hard metal like doom, dark, black, death, thrash etc) the majority those bands are all cliche and dont sound any different they all have crappy screaming and roaring, same sounding heavy guitar riffs, same over the top double bass kickers etc.
Do I detect a little ignorance?

megadeth can copy metallica riffs cuz dave was in metallica, wake up dead and looking down the cross have riffs from ride the lightning, the end of black friday is motorbreath 2x speed, 4 horsemen is mechanix, hangar 18 is cthulu. exc.. but this is unrelated bands playing other bands stuff. dave mustaine can use riffs he helped metallica make.. but if he were to rip off master of puppets or and justice for all's main riffs, he'd get sued.

its like coldplay taking joe satriani's '' if i could fly'' for viva la vida...
haha, no When is Ktulu. trust me, Hangar 18 sounds nothing like Ktulu in comparison. But some of the songs that are in comparison are very recent, when the bands are basically known as opposites to fans. I get your overall point though. Oh well, maybe the guy heard the riff, then later when they were writing songs, it came to mind and he thought he made it. It's happens when song writing. I once accidentally found South of Heaven by Slayer and thought I had written it haha. oh well, in the end it doesn't really matter. Here's a link to When, the song with the Ktulu riff and Am I Evil? riff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04G7whr-wxc%26feature=PlayList%26p=9E73F9D75B9C81F3%26playnext=1%26playnext_from=PL%26index=30%26fmt=18
sorry i didnt explain well enough, hangar 18 is the same chord progression as cthulu... ask a good guitar player that knows music theory and he'll confirm it for you.

ah, I see. My bad then. I play bass and have ADD so I skipped learning that song since it's so boring on bass haha.
